Karlstejn castle

Uncovering the secrets of Karlstejn

Just 30 km west of Prague is a beautiful Gothic castle, Karlstejn, one of the most famous Czech castles in all of Europe. The castle was built in the second half of the 14th century by the Bohemian King and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV. The castle's Chapel of the Holy Cross was intended to house the imperial coronation jewels as well as other precious royal artifacts. The holder of this historic collection was recognized as the rightful ruler of the Holy Roman Empire.

Always of special interest is a visit to the chapel of the Holy Cross which makes this a noteworthy trip.

Charles IV had Karlstejn castle built for the safekeeping of his collection of holy relics, including a splinter of wood from Jesus's Cross. The Chapel of the Holy Cross, located in the main tower of the castle, served as a vault for the coronation jewels. Its walls are inlaid with semi-precious stones and bear a famous series of 129 paintings of saints by the famous Gothic painter, Master Theodoric. A visit to the chapel has to be booked in advance and is possible only by reservation from April through October. A visit to the main route - representative halls, including the hall where the St. Wenceslas crown was kept and now its exact jewelry replica is possible without a preliminary order on any day except Monday.
